Good Carbohydrates

Having explained the bad carbs in the last article, it's now time to talk about the good carbs.  You'll remember I said that it is important to eat carbohydrates - you just need to make sure you eat the right ones to avoid gaining weight or to help you lose weight.

So what are the good carbs?

The foods which are rich in and an important source of carbohydrate are:
  • Wholegrain or rye breads
  • Wholegrain cereals
  • Brown Rice
  • Potatoes, especially sweet potatoes
  • Beans
  • Pulses
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Milk and dairy products

We should be consuming these as part of our everyday diet.  They tend to be rich in many nutrients - vitamins, minerals and fibre. Foods containing fibre can help manage steady blood sugar levels (so you don't get peaks and troughs, which are harder for the body to manage) and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Carbohydrate is the most important fuel for the body.  The secret to successful weight loss is to eat the right quantity and types of carbohydrates to provide enough fuel and energy for you for the day, but not so much that you end up storing most of it as fat. Including good carbohydrates helps you to feel good and full after a meal.

So, aim to include more wholegrains and fruit and vegetables in your diet to give your body the fuel you need....
